Dr. Marie Isom

Dr.  Marie Isom has dedicated her professional career to the mental health profession. She has been an Associate Professor teaching full-time in higher education since 2011. Dr. Isom has taught courses for various programs and certificate areas, served as a subject matter lead and curriculum designer, and a university supervisor. She has also served on various committees and been a faculty advisor for several organizations. She maintains an active membership in various professional organizations and has presented at workshops and conferences at the county, regional, and state levels. Research interests include resiliency, trauma, grief and loss, group counseling, and counselor education and supervision.

She has 4+ years of experience as a laboratory assistant for various undergraduate and graduate research departments and has participated in writing and revising accepted federal grant proposals for counseling programs offered in Northern Virginia. Dr. Isom has worked in community mental health as a counselor for children's grief camps, worked as a crisis responder serving seven counties in Michigan, and helped facilitate after school programs in Northern Virginia for middle school students that would be first generation college students.

In 2008, she began her work as a private practice psychotherapist working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Dr. Isom has 19 years of experience at the elementary and secondary levels in public school counseling. With many years of experience working with youth of all ages, she understands the struggles that families face from a universal standpoint and currently provides support to teens and caregivers experiencing challenges. 

She earned her BS in Psychology and Biology from Central Michigan University; MA in Counseling with a Concentration in School Counseling from Marymount University; and Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology with a Concentration in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy University.
